Definition of Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) and its Terminology
By: Stanley Yun Kai Fok
Here, I will discuss what is an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) and its related terms.
Firstly, what is an Entity Relationship Diagram?
-Similar to a flowchart, it is a type of diagram that depicts the relationship between the contents in any form of a relational database. These include entities, attributes, cardinality, and relationships. (Lucidchart, 2023)
What are Entities, Attributes, Cardinalities, and Relationships?
• Entities are objects or items of interest, typically a noun, which can be dissected into characteristics to be able to arrange more detailed planning.
• Attributes are the characteristic that an entity would consist of, which is also in a noun form.
• Cardinalities are the quantitative relationship formed between entities.
• Lastly, relationships are the association between two or more entities and how each one relates to another. Each one is written in verb form.
